Star Trek: Discovery is stirring up a lot of emotions in the Trek fandom. Some are excited for yet another installment in the franchise, while others believe that this new series doesn’t quite feel like the Star Trek they know and love. No matter your feelings on Discovery itself, though, there’s a good bet that you feel some type of way about Saru, played by Doug Jones, the Kelpien lieutenant that has the internet divided.
On the Kelpien’s home planet, you are either predator or prey. Upon meeting Saru, it’s obvious that his awkward, cautious demeanor has rendered him the latter. While some find this charming and endearing in the vein of Mr. Spock or Data, others are considering Saru the Jar-Jar Binks of Star Trek, according to Polygon.

I do like Rekha Sharma's Commander Landry and Doug Jones' Saru. pic.twitter.com/RTy20JSjwg
Wanna keep Star Trek: Discovery series alive? Kill off those unlikeable characters like Stamets, Saru, Tilly and Landry quickly. They SUCK!!— wma1999 (@wma1999) October 2, 2017
Only 2 episodes in and Saru is already the most annoying being on the bridge.— Kendra (@halifaxfilmgal) September 25, 2017
STAR TREK DISCOVERY: Yeoh is a treasure, Martin-Green does technobabble better than most, Saru's cute, lights are too dim, angles too canted— Angelo Muredda (@amuredda) September 25, 2017
OK, the new Star Trek has my attention, even though the Keplien, Saru, is all a bit Big Bang Sheldon.— Tim (@TimForde) September 25, 2017
Will Saru toughen up? Will people learn to love his quirkiness? Only time will tell!
